Analyzing Datasets to Support Advocacy Work

Our Research Program provides quantitative data collection and analysis in support of litigation and policy advocacy in the Voting Rights, Justice System Reform, and Environmental Justice program areas.

Research Work

We work with each program area to design and carry out research plans — both short- and long-term — that help move forward racial equity and social justice. We also partner with grassroots community organizations, giving them data and analysis they can use to strengthen their own social, political, and economic efforts.

To challenge systems of oppression, we often analyze large sets of data from many sources. We look for patterns, connections, and details others may miss, then carefully check the quality of the information. From there, we turn complex data into clear stories and reports that strengthen our legal and policy work.

We conduct Geographic Information System (GIS) Data Analysis to visualize patterns and identify trends within a geographic context. Mapping GIS data is especially valuable for analyzing voting districts and mapping environmental justice issues.

Research Core Strategies

Making Data Useful

By turning large amounts of data into clear, easy-to-use information, we help our focus areas better understand the context around their work and strengthen their legal and advocacy efforts.

Making Data Accessible Online

We create interactive online tools and static resources such as maps and graphs — like the Sampson County Landfill Origins Explorer, Missing Voters Report, and the School Resource Officer Grievance Tool — so communities have accessible data and information they can use.
