In January 2021, the Southern Coalition for Social Justice filed a “friend of the court” brief to the Supreme Court of the United States in the case of Brnovich v. DNC on behalf of four A. Philip Randolph Institute (APRI) chapters dedicated to defending voting rights across the South. As stated in the brief’s opening paragraphs, these APRI chapters are deeply interested in the outcome of Brnovich because “the reading of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act (“VRA”) proposed by petitioners would eviscerate vital protections for voters of color, particularly low-wealth/working-class Black voters, which enable them to participate on equal footing in the political process.”
