DURHAM, N.C. (Jan. 31, 2024)— Southern Coalition for Social Justice is mourning the loss of the League of Women Voters of the United States (LWVUS) President Dr. Deborah Turner.

Dr. Turner was a fierce defender of democracy and her legacy will live on as we continue the fight for equal access to the ballot box across the nation, and especially in the South where voting barriers continue to be enacted.
“Dr. Turner’s unwavering dedication to voting rights was a guiding light illuminating the path toward a more equitable and just society,” said Ryan Roberson, Executive Director of Southern Coalition for Social Justice. “Her leadership and partnership embodied the essence of civic engagement and inspired countless individuals to actively participate in fighting for fair representation in their communities. Her absence will be felt, but her legacy of empowerment and inclusivity will continue to shine bright.”
