James Huey joined Southern Coalition for Social Justice in 2023 and serves as Counsel for Environmental Justice.

James grew up in Charleston, S.C., and he graduated from the University of South Carolina Honors College in 2019 with a triple major in economics, supply chain, and management. After graduation, James worked for a boutique law firm and interned part-time for Congressman Jim Clyburn before heading to law school.

In 2023, James received his Juris Doctor from the University of North Carolina School of Law. While at UNC Law, James was a member of the North Carolina Law Review, the Environmental Moot Court team, the Dean’s Fellows program, and the Environmental Law Project. He also worked as a Research Assistant for Professor Maria Savasta-Kennedy, interned at the Southern Environmental Law Center, and externed at Earthjustice. At graduation, James was the recipient of the UNC Bane Writing Award.

James is passionate about providing legal representation for historically disenfranchised communities in the South who are wronged by environmental injustices.
