Case Summary
The nonprofit Friends of Horse Creek Valley and the South Carolina Environmental Law Project filed a challenge on Aug. 16, 2024, to stop a new landfill from being built in Burnettown, South Carolina.
Southern Coalition for Social Justice (SCSJ) joined as co-counsel, filing a notice of appearance on Oct. 9, 2024.
Why it's Important
The proposed 293-acre landfill called Rabbit Hill is sited in the Horse Creek Valley area, adjacent to a much smaller old, closed landfill and Jefferson Elementary School. The area is known for its historical significance and beauty, but it has also faced cumulative impacts from dirty, polluting industries and past environmental disasters. An astounding 13 EPA-designated contaminated sites are located within the four-mile stretch encompassing these communities, as well as several existing landfills and dumps.
