Position Summary: 

The Southern Coalition for Social Justice (SCSJ), the South’s leading social justice organization, is seeking an experienced, creative, and strategic Social Media Strategist to help develop and distribute content across SCSJ’s social media channels and digital networks.  

The focus of this role is to develop strategy for, create and manage SCSJ’s daily social media content and publishing calendar, explore innovative ways to drive audience engagement and growth across social platforms; and monitor the performance of social media efforts. The Social Media Strategist will create and post social media content to uplift the stories of SCSJ, its programs and campaigns, and the clients and communities SCSJ serves as a means of amplifying the organization’s crucial legal, research, organizing, and advocacy interests. Primary program areas include Voting Rights, Justice System Reform, and Environmental Justice. 

Reporting to SCSJ’s Communications Director, the Social Media Strategist will work closely with other communications advocates to achieve programmatic objectives. The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise operating on social media platforms, a passion for online advocacy and communications, and proven ability to effectively coordinate content across multiple platforms and deadlines. This person will join a passionate group of committed communications professionals who believe in investing in bold ideas, innovation and storytelling to help grassroots organizations deepen their impact across the South. Responsibilities include: 

Social Media Strategy and Execution 

  • Develop long-term vision, strategies, goals and tactics for SCSJ’s social media presence and audience growth. 
  • Create, edit, and post content on SCSJ’s social media platforms on a daily basis, and maintain a social media calendar. 
  • Create and distribute content such as blog posts, infographics, videos and other content for social media. 
  • Craft and implement creative, multi-faceted social media strategies for advocacy, public education, and live events, as well as media, development, and marketing campaigns. 
  • Identify high-impact opportunities to increase the visibility of SCSJ’s advocacy, programmatic, and community work, and generate email lists and social media audience growth. 
  • Cultivate relationships with partners and social media influencers to amplify engagement with SCSJ’s social media content. 
  • Monitor and track success of social media and online engagement initiatives in achieving programmatic goals. 
  • Monitor trends and emerging practices in social media. 
  • Evaluate and recommend new platforms for SCSJ’s presence. 
  • Track and analyze weekly and quarterly data to monitor SCSJ’s performance. 
  • Pitch stories to the relevant platforms when needed (Apple News, Flipboard, SmartNews, Facebook News). 
  • Under the direction of the Communications Director, develop and execute paid social media campaigns.

Content Development and Communications Support 

  • Write, edit, design and post high-quality social content to core platforms on a daily basis, including Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube and future platforms.  
  • Identify and execute creative and culturally relevant distribution tactics to innovate how we use social media accounts, promote our content and engage with our audience. 
  • Collaborate with SCSJ’s Communications team to align with community engagement opportunities, timelines, and messaging guidelines and translate messaging into highly engaging and effective campaigns. 
  • Assist with monitoring media alerts and key publications for news related to SCSJ, and share content with relevant parties internally. 
  • Occasionally work evenings and weekends, as needed. 
  • Leverage and/or tailor content and messaging for specific audiences, especially journalists and news media. 
  • Create graphics for social media, presentations, and distribution designed to amplify and support SCSJ, its partners, programs and projects. 
  • Maintain website updates and posts as needed. 
  • Develop and provide off-hour/non-peak rotation content across social platforms. 
  • Provide live, on-location, social media coverage and content for advocacy, development events, rallies and other functions. 
  • Support communications campaigns as needed.

Qualifications include: 

  • Minimum of three years’ professional experience managing social media platforms in advocacy, political, communications, marketing, development or related fields required. 
  • Technical expertise operating and managing major social media accounts, including on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube required. Strong experience operating TikTok, as well as other trending or emerging social media platforms preferred. 
  • Experience with some graphic design preferred. 
  • Experience providing communications support through a racial justice lens.
  • Existing presence in the social justice and/or justice transformation community and or a commitment to social justice principles and to SCSJ’s community-lawyering model of practice. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (writing, editing, formatting, and proofreading skills). 
  • Highly organized with meticulous attention to detail. 
  • Ability to be self-reliant, self-directed, and highly efficient under tight deadlines; to independently resolve problems; to communicate clearly as part of a team of lawyers, organizers, researchers and communication specialists; and to take responsibility for multiple projects or tasks at a time. 
  • Some knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and other design and social media programs, including Canva and Hootsuite, is a plus. 
  • Some familiarity with HTML and experience editing and maintaining website content, preferably in WordPress. 
  • Ability to prioritize, organize and balance a heavy workload with a high level of productivity, proficiency, and precision. 
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and processes. 
  • Strong team player.

Salary & Benefits:  

The Communications Advocate starting salary range is from $50,000 to $65,000 base pay per year, commensurate with experience, and includes comprehensive health and retirement plans. 


The Social Media Strategist will work from SCSJ’s office located in Durham, North Carolina. Due to the ongoing public health crisis, SCSJ staff will be working remotely until advised that it is safe to return to work. During this period of remote time, we are working with staff on an individual basis to set up flex schedules if needed for childcare or other care commitments.
